A soft board is a symptom. Water got through the surface, sat on the joist under it, and has been there for years. Replace the board and you have covered the problem back up.
So the first thing is lifting a couple of boards and looking. Most decks I get called to need a handful of boards and two or three joists sistered. Some need more, and it is better to hear that with the boards up than after the new surface is down.
What I repair
- Rotted and soft decking boards, matched to what is there
- Joists sistered or replaced where the rot has reached the frame
- Railings that move — the single most common safety call
- Stair treads and stringers
- Posts at the ground line, where they nearly always fail
- Sanding, staining and sealing once it is sound
Rails are the one to not leave
A rail that moves when you lean on it is holding nothing. It is the one item on this page I would not leave over a winter, especially on a raised deck or a porch with steps.

Straight answers
- Can you match the boards?
- Usually close, and it weathers in over a season. An exact match on an old deck is not realistic and I would rather say so than promise it.
- Is it worth repairing or replacing?
- If the frame is sound, repair, every time. If the joists are gone across most of it, replacing is cheaper than chasing it. A photo with a couple of boards up tells me which.
